The term "internal bra surgery" has seen a significant surge in interest, with a notable increase in Google searches over the past year.

This rising curiosity reflects a broader shift in aesthetic preferences, as more individuals seek procedures that offer natural and lasting results.

What is internal bra surgery?

Internal bra surgery, often referred to as an "internal bra lift" is a technique designed to provide enhanced support to the breast tissue.

This procedure involves the insertion of a supportive mesh or sling beneath the skin to act as an internal ‘scaffold’, aiming to maintain the breasts' lifted position over time.

Mr Naveen Cavale, a renowned plastic surgeon at Real Plastic Surgery, commented: "It's crucial for patients to understand that not all procedures labelled as 'internal bra surgeries' involve the use of internal support materials.

“Some practitioners may use the term to describe a traditional uplift, which can be misleading."

Natural aesthetics

Recent statistics from the BAAPS indicate that in 2023, breast reduction procedures were among the top five surgical choices for women in the UK, with 3,395 operations performed.

This trend suggests a shift towards more natural aesthetics, with many individuals opting for smaller, more proportionate breast sizes.

Mr Cavale has observed this evolution in patient preferences firsthand.

"Over the past few years, there's been a noticeable move towards downsizing," he notes. "Many patients are now seeking smaller implants or choosing to remove them altogether, aiming for a more natural look that aligns with their lifestyle and personal comfort."

While internal bra surgery offers potential benefits, Mr Cavale approaches breast enhancement with a different philosophy. "I typically recommend a breast reduction combined with implants," he explains. "This method provides longer-lasting and more satisfactory results for many patients.

“However, it's important to consider that implants may require replacement every 10 to 15 years, which is a factor patients should weigh when making their decision."

Why is it popular?

The increasing interest in procedures like the internal bra surgery can be attributed to several factors.

The desire for a more natural appearance, influenced by celebrities and public figures embracing smaller breast sizes, has permeated mainstream culture.

Additionally, advancements in surgical techniques and materials have made such procedures more accessible and appealing to a broader audience.

However, Mr Cavale emphasises the importance of patient education and realistic expectations.

"Understanding the nuances of each technique, the potential risks, and the long-term maintenance involved is crucial for making an informed choice that aligns with one's goals and health considerations."
